DRAWING
I find drawing to be a great way to think through an artwork or idea, prior to getting into the studio. It is not something I force myself to do on a daily basis nor is a laborious activity. I engage with sketchbooks in a way of purposefully keeping things open, my drawings are loose, actional and indicative.
Drawing is a huge part of how I make sculpture, moving from the two into three dimensional and back appears to be where most discoveries happen. I enjoy that small moment to sketch, not mindlessly but not with overly serious intent either, there is a definite middle ground where things come to fruition. Within any project I undergo, drawing plays a crucial role in visualising and presenting an idea, prior to production.
I look at drawing as a very private activity, an intimate encounter with your own visual and material self. I go through stages, I either do twenty five drawings in one singular sitting or no drawings for a week or so. There is a sort of excitement and energy which the activity entails, I need to be in the correct headspace for it to operate successfully.
The thing I like most about drawing is that it will always be there, no matter how sculptural or material based my practice gets, there is something calming about engaging with the key foundations of making, which we all can relate to one way or another.
