Marked Paper

Marked Paper, 2025
Installation for Hidden Door Festival
The Crane Shed, Paper Factory, Edinburgh

Marked Paper is a site-responsive painting installation by April, unfolding within the raw, post-industrial architecture of the Crane Shed at Edinburgh’s Paper Factory. Extending a process-led and emotionally charged practice into the expanded field, the work reimagines painting not as a bounded surface, but as a spatial, material, and durational encounter.
Painting leads the body— across concrete floors, corrugated walls, and exposed structural elements. Gesture, colour, and mark-making respond directly to the textures, temperatures, and prompts of the site, drawing out a dialogue between body, surface and space. Materiality is not fixed but provisional and permeable, shaped by time, presence, and environment.
Marked Paper engages with scale and site through quiet insistence rather than spectacle. It resists control and completion, favouring instead vulnerability, trust, and an embodied negotiation with place. The installation is a navigation — painting as movement, as listening, as care.
The Installation will be presented during the Hidden Door Music Festival (June 11–15, 2025), Marked Paper positions painting as an open field of relations: between materials and site, artist and audience, control and release.
